I went through this exact conundrum and feel for you big time. I’m currently 38 and pregnant with my second; I’ll be 39 when she’s born, and my daughter will be 4 1/2. I was out of work for a long time and was trying for both — baby and job — to see what happened first. They both happened at the same time (of course). I’m tired and overwhelmed and excited and scared. I know it’s going to be hard, but I’m going for it for all the reasons you mentioned. Sending lots of love & strength 💗

First of all, holy moly, Modern Love, congrats! Second of all. I have a dusty draft of an essay about why am decidedly one and done and I think you’ve inspired me to get around to posting it. It’s a mixture of reasons: financial, age, and mostly my mental health issues. Having one kid nearly broke me but I think I’ve managed to do a pretty good job. I know I’d be a shit mother to both if I had a second. But I had one sister and so did my husband and to me two parents and two kids has always been what “a family” means to me. My son is now old enough to have started asking me for a sibling and boy does it get to me. I wish I had some soothing words to say, but all I can say is you’re not alone in this grief. Please feel free to PM me.
